BROWARD COUNTY, FL - The American Society of Civil Engineers Broward Branch announced that Broward County's Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) has won its Project of the Year Award. The project "FLL West Side Water Main Improvements" won first place from among all the projects submitted. The civil engineering award recognizes projects that demonstrate design and construction excellence.

Workers installed more than 5,000 feet of underground pipes ranging in size from 12 to 30 inches in diameter to bring additional water to the airport's west side. One goal of the project was to provide adequate potable water to current private aircraft companies. Another goal was to increase the amount of water available for firefighting at these companies. Extinguishing aircraft related fires requires a high volume of water. Engineers also designed these improvements to meet the water needs of future development. The construction took place with minimal disruption to traffic and airport operations.

The project was a joint effort by engineers from the Broward County Aviation Department and EAC Consulting, Inc.
