BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Less than one week ago on August 10, the country of Colombia experienced a 7.4 magnitude earthquake, causing significant damage throughout the region and the loss of many lives. Beginning Monday, August 17, Broward County will launch a Countywide relief effort to collect and send essential supplies to the Colombian communities devastated by the earthquake as they begin the difficult task of rebuilding homes, restoring power, and recovering essential services.
The County is calling on residents and businesses to join in this united relief effort. Critical resources needed include non-perishable foods, personal hygiene products, baby items, pet supplies and disaster recovery gear such as tents, sleeping bags, first aid kits, solar-powered lights, tarps, batteries and work gloves. No new or used clothes or linens will be accepted.
"The Colombian community is an essential part of Broward County's identity. When their loved ones face tragedy, we stand right beside them. Through this relief fund, we're establishing a trusted channel to deliver vital aid, food, and financial resources directly to the hardest-hit areas," said Broward County Mayor Mark D. Bogen. "Broward has never hesitated to step up in global emergencies, and I know our residents will answer the call once again."
