Project to Raise Sheridan Street Bridge Over Florida's Turnpike

- $12.7 million project to start in July 2026 -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward County's Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division, in partnership with contractor Structural Technologies, will launch a $12.7 million infrastructure project to raise the Sheridan Street Bridge over Florida's Turnpike (see attached map). This project occurs in District 7, represented by Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis.

Mobilization will begin in June 2026, with major construction scheduled to start in July 2026 and finish by Spring 2027. Funding for this multi-million project comes from the Florida Department of Transportation and the Penny for Transportation Surtax.

The 0.5-mile project will elevate the bridge by two feet, increasing vertical clearance from 14'6" to 16"6". This adjustment meets current vertical clearance standards and reduces the risk of vehicle impacts and structural damage.

Beyond lifting the bridge structure, the project includes extensive roadway profile modifications:

  • Installation of new curbs, gutters, and sidewalks
  • Driveway improvements along the corridor
  • Addition of designated shared lanes for cyclists or motorists
  • Comprehensive updates to area lighting and drainage systems

Construction will occur in two distinct phases to keep traffic moving. Motorist and pedestrian access to local businesses and residences will remain open at all times. Emergency vehicles will have access at all times.

  • Summer - Fall 2026: Westbound lanes of Sheridan Street will close. Eastbound lanes will be reconfigured to carry one lane of traffic in each direction. Crews will elevate and reconstruct the westbound side.
  • Winter 2026 - 2027: Eastbound lanes of Sheridan Street will close. Westbound lanes will be reconfigured to carry one lane of traffic in each direction. Crews will elevate and reconstruct the eastbound side.
  • Nightly Diversions: Complete nightly closures of all Sheridan Street lanes will occur periodically to safely set up these traffic diversions.

Florida's Turnpike Traffic & Detours

Three travel lanes will be maintained in each direction on the Turnpike during the day. Nightly single-lane closures will occur in each direction to install the bridge jacking support systems.

The project requires up to 12 total nights of full Turnpike closures between 10 PM and 4 AM for bridge lifting operations in August 2026 and December 2026. Drivers must use the following regional detours during full closures:

  • Northbound Detour: Exit the Turnpike at Hollywood Boulevard (Exit 49), head northbound on US 441/SR 7, and re-enter the Turnpike at Griffin Road.
  • Southbound Detour: Exit the Turnpike at Griffin Road (Exit 53) or Westbound SR 84 (Exit 54), head southbound on US 441/SR 7, and re-enter the Turnpike at Hollywood Boulevard.

Public safety is the top priority for this project. Advanced warning signs, work zone indicators, and lighted message boards will be placed throughout the construction corridor. The project team is coordinating with local municipalities, schools, and neighborhood associations to minimize public disruption.

The County appreciates your input as we finalize this important roadway safety project.
