County Enhances E-911 Emergency System

- More proof of its commitment to Public Safety -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - The County's Office of Regional Communications and Technology, responsible for Broward's public safety radio system, computer aided dispatch system, and related technology at the E-911 call centers, has implemented yet another enhancement to the E-911 system for residents, businesses, and visitors.

VIPER 7, the call-handling system designed to improve emergency response, has been upgraded with a major new feature.

Automated Abandoned Call-Back will automatically call back anyone who hangs up after dialing 9-1-1. This ensures that no emergency call is missed, prevents potential emergencies from being overlooked, and helps provide timely assistance. The automated call back feature also increases efficiency, freeing operators to focus on active calls.

"The new features in VIPER 7 significantly enhance Broward's ability to provide communications systems able to respond, even in a lost call," said Mayor Beam Furr. "We're always adapting and implementing new technologies to improve emergency communications which is a priority of the Commission and certainly all residents and visitors alike."

Broward County operates the Regional Public Safety Communications system, and is responsible for funding, designing, and managing all technological and physical infrastructure countywide. Through a formal agreement, the Broward Sheriff's Office provides the call-takers and dispatchers who handle emergency calls. This Regional system serves 27 of the county's 31 municipalities.

"In any emergency, every second counts. The Viper 7 technology and the Automated Abandoned Call-Back feature are about saving lives. This latest upgrade reflects our proactive approach to public safety.  Innovation changes constantly and we will continue to advance our E-911 system as technology gets better and better," said Commissioner Michael Udine.

The County is responsible for all 911 calls within County boundaries, regardless of participation in the Regional System. The Office of Regional Communications and Technology teams are currently training non-regional center staff in Plantation and Coral Springs on the use of the Viper 7 system. Once that is completed, this enhancement will be implemented in the non-regional dispatch centers to maintain consistency across the entire County.

The Broward County Regional Consolidated dispatch centers answer approximately 192,000 emergency calls per month.
