BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Since last Friday's tragic events at the Airport, Broward County has received dozens of media requests from national news networks, local affiliates and countless other print and online media organizations, requesting that Broward County release information regarding the victims of the shooting incident that occurred at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on January 6, 2017.
Broward County has had concerns that certain records from the incident may be exempt from disclosure under Florida Public Records law and other legal provisions, concerns that were emphasized by federal investigating authorities. There were also requests from some family members that certain information not be disclosed for personal reasons.
Since that time, media obtained four of the five victim's names through other sources. Pursuant to advice of the Broward County Attorney and in accordance with Florida Public Records Law, certain limited information legally required to be released is now being disclosed.
- Shirley Wells Timmons, 70, Female, Unknown, Ohio
- Mary Louise Amzibel, 69, Female, Unknown, Ohio
- Michael John Oehme, 57, Male, Council Bluffs, Iowa
- Olga M. Woltering, 84, Female, Marietta, Georgia
- Terry Michael Andres, 62, Male, Virginia Beach, Virginia
"It was Broward County's intent to officially release the names of all the victims at the appropriate time, with respect for the family's wishes and in accordance with state and federal laws. However, the media's persistence in demanding the names has hastened the release of this limited information as required by law," said Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief.
Other information that has been requested by the media has not been disclosed pursuant to the exemption provided in Florida Statute 119.071 (2) (C) (criminal investigation record exemption).
