BROWARD COUNTY, FL - The Historic Preservation Board (HPB) and HPB staff attended the Historic Preservation Training for Certified Local Governments (CLG) on Tuesday, January 26th, 2016. An invitation to attend this exclusive workshop was a result of the Board's recent application to be recognized as a Certified Local Government. Broward's HPB was acknowledged as being a top contender for the program by Michael Zimny, the State of Florida's CLG Coordinator with the Division of Historical Resources.
If the HPB receives the CLG status, they will be eligible for many distinct benefits including: preservation grants, training and technical assistance, a formal role in the National Register nomination process, involvement in statewide preservation planning and property tax abatement opportunities.
About the Historic Preservation Board
The Historic Preservation Board designates or recommends for designation historic landmarks and districts, and then reviews applications to alter, add on to, demolish or move a landmark or properties within a historic district. Comprehensive plans, zoning, subdivision, and other land use laws can also be instrumental in supporting historic preservation and neighborhood conservation programs. Visit HPB online.
About the CLG Program
The Certified Local Government (CLG) program was enacted as part of the National Historic Preservation Act Amendments of 1980. The program links three levels of government - federal, state and local - into a preservation partnership for the identification, evaluation and protection of historic properties. Designation as a certified local government, either as a municipality or a county, makes historic preservation a public policy through passage of a historic preservation ordinance. The ordinance establishes a historic preservation board to develop and oversee the functions of its historic preservation program.
