BROWARD COUNTY, FL - The Mosquito Control Section will conduct larvicide spraying in areas of Hollywood and Pembroke Pines, from Monday, August 31 through Friday, September 4, 2026, barring unforeseen circumstances or weather delays (see attached map). Truck-mounted sprayers will apply larvicide between 10PM and 6AM as a proactive measure to kill the larvae of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, known to potentially spread diseases such as dengue, yellow fever, and chikungunya. The larvae of these mosquitoes can be found in small amounts of water retained in containers and in water-holding plants like bromeliads and traveler's palms, which are common in local landscaping.
The larvicide, VectoBac WDG, does not harm humans, pets, bees, aquatic habitats, or environmentally sensitive areas. The active ingredient, Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti, strain AM6552), is a naturally occurring, biodegradable bacterial mosquito larvicide. It is certified by the Organic Materials Review Institute and is registered for use by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. VectoBac WDG has been reviewed by the World Health Organization and is listed as a recommended formulation for the control of mosquito larvae.
This project will take place in District 6, represented by Commissioner Beam Furr and in District 7, represented by Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis. The Broward County Mosquito Control Section continues to partner with the Florida Department of Health and Code Enforcement agencies across Broward's 31 municipalities to reduce the population of mosquitoes and their habitats.
Residents and business owners are encouraged to help reduce mosquito breeding habitats by regularly inspecting their property and removing standing water found in buckets, tires, planters, birdbaths, and fountains. Reducing these breeding habitats helps decrease the number of adult mosquitoes that may transmit diseases.
