BROWARD COUNTY, FL -
Broward County Commissioner Beam Furr joined South Florida Water Management District Executive Director Drew Bartlett and regional partners to formally sign the Final Integrated
Feasibility Report and Environmental Assessment for the Central and Southern
Florida Flood Resiliency (Section 203) Study-marking a major step toward
implementing one of the region's most critical infrastructure projects.
The study is designed to reduce
flood risk across Broward County and parts of Palm Beach County by improving
the performance of water control systems spanning more than 420 square miles.
It represents a cornerstone of Broward County's long-term strategy to save
lives, strengthen resilience, protect communities, and safeguard billions in
economic assets.
The Section 203 Study is the product of years of
collaboration between Broward County, the South Florida Water Management
District, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and many engaged
stakeholders.
Broward County has demonstrated commitment to this project by
dedicating $5 million in funding to accelerate progress. The next stages
include design, land acquisition, and construction, and Broward County is proud
to work with partner organizations on these critical next steps.
"This is about protecting
our communities today while preparing for the realities of tomorrow. Flooding
isn't a future problem in South Florida-it's already here, and this work
ensures we're making every effort to stay ahead of it," said Commissioner Furr.
With the report now finalized,
the project advances to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for potential
authorization under the Water Resources Development Act in 2026-opening the
door to critical federal funding and support.
The signing took place at the G-56 Structure in Deerfield
Beach and brought together representatives from multiple agencies and partner
organizations. This milestone underscores the level of coordination and
investment required to deliver long-term flood protection for South Florida.
The signing featured representatives from Broward County,
the South Florida Water Management District, Florida DEP, and other agencies
and stakeholders. This well-attended ceremony was a testament to the
collaboration and investment that has made this milestone possible.
