Story Slam Contest at African American Research Library February 2, 2019
-True stories on the theme of "Heroes" -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Novices and seasoned storytellers alike can compete for cash prizes at the Fort Lauderdale Story Slam on February 2, 2019, at 7PM, telling true, personal “Hero” stories at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, 2650 Sistrunk Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL, 33311.

The Fort Lauderdale Story Slam is a storytelling contest in which competitors tell 5-7 minute true tales about their own lives in connection with a theme. The performances cover a wide range of human experience, and can be funny, intense, moving, quirky, eye-opening and even controversial, as the storytellers invite you to see the world through their eyes. The ages 21-and-over evening features eight storytellers and includes fun, interactive storytelling games for the audience between the stories. Doors open at 6PM for a pre-show art exhibit and live music by Inez Barlatier.

If you’ve got a great story and you’d like to be in the February 2nd slam, please submit your idea for a true, personal story on the event theme: "Heroes." There is $100 prize money for the favorite story of the night, and two $50 prizes for the runners-up. The 2019 Story Slam is one of several Broward County Library Reads programs with the theme of “Heroes,” inspired by the books of bestselling local author Brad Meltzer. Other signature events of Broward County Library Reads take place on Saturday, January 19, Noon-10PM with “ArtLit 2019: A Day of Heroes” at Pompano Beach Library and Cultural Center;  and two “Heroes With Us: An Afternoon with Brad Meltzer” appearances on Saturday, January 26 with a 2PM family event and a 3:15PM  Adult Author’s Workshop at Southwest Regional Library.

The Fort Lauderdale Story Slam has received Creative Investment Program (CIP) grant funding from the Broward Cultural Division, with additional support from Choose 954, Screaming Armadillo, Afro Diaries, and NSU’s Lifelong Learning Institute.
