BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Work is set to begin on the year and a half long Andrews Avenue Drawbridge Rehabilitation Project in Fort Lauderdale. The project is scheduled to start in late July 2018 and be completed by January 2020, barring any unforeseen conditions or weather delays.
The Andrews Avenue Drawbridge, located just south of Broward Boulevard, is part of South Andrews Avenue and spans over the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Other than regular maintenance-related repairs, the bridge has not received any upgrades or refurbishments and the original 37-year-old machinery is nearing the end of its useful life.
DETAILS: The project includes the complete replacement of the bridge’s electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and emergency response systems; upgrades to the pedestrian ramps accessing the bridge; and required modifications and upgrades to the bridge tender house. The project also includes the installation of noise mitigating measures to the bridge deck, underdeck lighting, and roadway light posts which will harmonize with those already installed in the area.
AREAS EFFECTED: Andrews Avenue from Las Olas Boulevard to South 5th Street, including the pedestrian access ramp on the southside, and the Tender Control Tower on the northside of the bridge.
TRAFFIC IMPACTS:
-
In early 2019, special construction activities may require the closure of one lane in both directions for an extended period. A 21-day notice will be provided to the traveling public.
-
In mid-2019, one full closure of the bridge will take place for a period no longer than 30 days. A 90-day notice will be provided to the traveling public prior to this closure. Posted detour signs will re-route vehicular traffic through the SW 7th Avenue Drawbridge.
-
Boaters will notice minimal impacts to navigation.
