Libraries' Reach Out, Reach Up Program Helps Formerly Incarcerated

- Partnership with BSO utilizes library resources to aid reentry -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward County Library (BCL) is pleased to announce the introduction of a new community initiative: “Reach Out, Reach Up!” In partnership with the Broward Reentry Center of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, this program enables formerly incarcerated individuals to use library resources for job readiness, technology and educational programs to build their futures.

The program assists men and women in the process of transitioning to community life by introducing them to library services and classes currently offered by BCL. These resources, which can promote successful reintegration into society, may be unknown to those who need the services most. “Reach Out, Reach Up” strives to increase awareness and participation in library services, programs, classes and creative spaces. Participants receive flash drives to keep and organize their resume, class notes and job search information.

“We are often told that America is a country of second chances,” says BCL Adult Services Coordinator Michael Bryant. “The Reach Out, Reach Up program embodies that.”

Once registered, each participant is paired with a Library Liaison who develops a personalized success plan tailored to his or her needs. The participant will be walked through the steps of discovering the library and using its resources to successfully adjust to community life. The Library Liaison will offer individual guidance for job readiness, technology skills, literacy, information and education as participants re-enter their Broward County communities.

To participate or obtain additional information, please contact one of the participating libraries and schedule a one-on-one session with one of the Library Liaisons:
