Broward County Main Library Receives "The Great American Read"
- Grant will support library programs about America's best-loved books -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward County Main Library received a grant from the American Library Association (ALA) and PBS to host programs around “The Great American Read,” an eight-part television series and multi-platform initiative that celebrates the joy of reading and the books we love. Broward County Libraries Division is partnering with South Florida PBS station WPBT-Channel 2 in bringing you the series. The list of books may be found online at or in the attachment at the bottom of the page. Vote for your favorite book at You can also vote for your favorite book at the Great American Read computer on the second floor of Main Library.

All books on the list may be borrowed as an e-book or hard copy from all Broward County Libraries, and you can search for and place holds on copies at the library's online catalog. Main Library was one of just 50 libraries out of 220 public libraries nationwide that applied for the grant to be selected to host events for The Great American Read.


Current programs scheduled for The Great American Read at the Main Library, located at 100 S Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale, are:


July 17th from 6-7:30PM El Club, for intermediate Spanish learners, will read the Spanish edition of Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse. One chapter will be read aloud as a class every week for 12 weeks followed by a discussion about what has been read.


August 4th from 4-5:30PM – Dr. Caren Neile of Florida Atlantic University will lead us in the discussion of “How to Read: Getting Great Things from Good Books."


August 18, 2-3PM – Dr. Christine Jackson of Nova University will lead us in a discussion of the key themes found in the books of The Great American Read.


October 23, 8PM – Main Library will be the site of the finale that reveals America’s best-loved novel as chosen by the public.WPBT-Channel 2 will host the screening and discussion that evening.


Additional events about The Great American Read at Main Library are in the planning stages.
