Take a Hike, Read a Poem

- Program pairs poetry and pines -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Join Miramar Pineland in celebrating National Poetry Month with a Hike-U / Haiku Walk on the park's nature trail, where you can "experience" haiku poetry on small signs along the way. Participants are invited to take a leisurely self-guided hike, 8AM to 7:30PM daily, with no fee except on weekends, when the park's gate fee of $1.50/person (children 5 and under free) is in effect.

Based on classic Japanese haiku, English-language haiku are very short poems emphasizing imagery, often nature-related, over ideas and metaphors. The format is typically three lines with a total of 17 syllables, arranged in a 5-7-5 pattern, although variations are common.

The American Academy of Poets established April as National Poetry Month in 1996. Since then, the observance has spread to become the largest literary celebration in the world, promoted by libraries, schools, publishers, booksellers, and, of course, poets themselves as a way to encourage appreciation of poetry. Miramar Pineland (3600 S University Dr., Miramar 33025) joined the celebration last year. Visitors are welcome to share their comments, or even their own haiku inspired by their walk, at the park's gatehouse.

For more information, call the park at 954-357-8776, or visit the American Academy of Poets Web page.
