BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. - The new Broward County Courthouse in downtown Fort Lauderdale is well on its way to completion and will soon be one of the largest courthouse facilities in the nation when it opens next summer.

Broward County Commissioners, the Chief Judge, State Attorney, Public Defender, the Clerk of the Courts and a number of people who will use the courthouse facilities toured the 20-story building on Friday.

“Construction workers hit a milestone in February when they topped off the building by placing the last of the structural elements on the twentieth floor,” said Broward Mayor Barbara Sharief. “What you see today is the result of more than 625,000 hours of labor that is quickly bringing Broward County’s new Courthouse as a welcome addition to the downtown skyline.”

The $315 million Courthouse Complex project has stimulated business locally and nationally, and generated approximately 2,400 jobs, including nearly 350 workers per day on site. In April, the bridge linking all of the buildings in the complex together will start taking shape. The new 1,000 parking garage will open in May.

"When I became mayor, we were dealing with a deteriorating building and a referendum rejected by the voters," said Commissioner Stacy Ritter. "So, I created a County Courthouse Task Force to come up with answers and sell the public on the solutions. Under the guidance of former Commissioner Ilene Lieberman, who served as chair, and County Administrator Bertha Henry a plan was devised to build a new courthouse without burdening taxpayers. A big league county needs a functioning courthouse."

The project includes 714,000-square-feet of new office space featuring 77 courtrooms with additional space for expansion, an improved flow for visitors and employees and enhanced security screening areas. Estimated completion date is summer 2015 and project managers say that they are well underway to meeting that timeframe.
