Small Businesses Encouraged to Attend Seminar on Construction Management Development and Bond Guarantee Programs

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla.Broward County Office of Economic and Small Business Development, Broward College and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) have partnered to host the “Your Road to Working with FDOT” informational seminar for small businesses and Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBEs) seeking to bid and perform FDOT construction projects.

The informational seminar will be held twice on Thursday, September 26, at 2 p.m. and again at 6 p.m., at Broward College Holcombe Center, 111 Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale

The event is open to the public and admission is free. Local businesses are encouraged to attend and learn how to prepare their companies to competitively bid on FDOT construction projects. 

The Construction Estimating Institute, a national provider of construction training, will present the seminar. Topics include FDOT’s Bond Guarantee Program, designed to assist DBEs in securing bonding for FDOT funded projects. The State of Florida acts as a second surety, guaranteeing the construction bonds. The presentation will include an overview of bonding and construction, types of bonds, rights of the surety, reasons for default, description of surety industry bonding criteria, loan and bond package portfolio checklist, and evaluation of bond application. Other highlighted topics include:

• How to bid public work
• Jobs in your area
• How to access the FDOT's website
• Available training for small businesses 

Attendees will also have an opportunity to sign-up for other training courses on the Construction Management Development Program, which will be available on various dates in October and November.

Broward County is a part of the Florida Department of Transportation's Unified Certification Program (UCP) and certifies firms located in Broward and Palm Beach counties for the Federal Disadvantaged Business Enterprise program.

The County currently offers certifications for small businesses including, the County Business Enterprise, the Small Business Enterprise, Disadvantaged Business Enterprise and the Airport Concessions Disadvantaged Business Enterprise programs. Certification in these programs provides a gateway to other services that support the growth and sustainability of Broward County's business community.
