The Broward County Board of County Commissioners today approved a legislative action to temporarily fund the continued operation of the North Perry Airport (HWO) control tower. The Broward County Aviation Department (BCAD) operating fund will cover the estimated $43,000 per month expense. BCAD plans to maintain staffing for the control tower for approximately nine hours a day during peak operating times through September 2013.

HWO is the designated general aviation reliever airport for Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and has four intersecting runways, as well as 365 aircraft based at the airport.

As a result of federal government sequestration impacts, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) notified BCAD that the control tower at HWO would be closed effective midnight on April 6, 2013.

Please see attachment under "Release Properties" below for additional background on HWO.
