The Northeast Transit Center, Broward County Transit’s newest bus transfer facility located at 304 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., Pompano Beach, will have its grand opening celebration on Saturday, November 17, from 10 a.m. to noon. This event is free and open to the public.

Federal, state, county and local officials and partner agencies have been invited to offer their comments at the opening, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony, tour of the facility, musical and dance entertainment, and a drumming workshop to celebrate the public artwork at the bus terminal.

The interactive public artwork, titled "Pompano Drum Circle," was commissioned through the Broward County Public Art and Design Program and designed by artists Bill and Mary Buchen. It is a grouping of five sculptural percussion instruments inspired by the musical traditions of cultures represented in the local area, the African, Bahamian, Brazilian, Cuban and Haitian communities. Each culture has a distinct musical tradition and they all have a common link through the use of percussion.

The Northeast Transit Center will consist of several passenger amenities: passenger drop-off area, bus platform canopies, public restrooms, walk-up customer information window, bench seating and pergola. Bus routes 20, 42, 50, 60 and Pompano Beach Community Bus Service will stop at the facility. The Center received a NatureScape Broward certification for creating a Florida-friendly landscape that conserves water, protects water quality and creates a wildlife habitat.

The estimated $5.3 million facility was funded through the Florida Department of Transportation, District IV grants and local matches comprised of transit impact fees. It comprises 3.5 acres and is part of the Pompano Beach Northwest Community Redevelopment Area. Partners include the Florida Department of Transportation, District IV and the City of Pompano Beach.
