Whether you’re a seasoned sewing pro or first-timer, visit Broward County Libraries in September to celebrate National Sewing Month and learn more about sewing and other crafts such as applique and embroidery. National Sewing Month was launched in 1982, when the American Home Sewing & Craft Association requested that President Ronald Reagan declare September National Sewing Month “in recognition of the importance of home sewing to our nation.”

This year’s theme is “Sew for the Fun of It,” and Broward County Library is offering three National Sewing Month programs to encourage just that:

  • September 5 - National Sewing Month with the American Sewing Guild - Zippers! 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Northwest Regional Library, 3151 University Dr., Coral Springs, FL 33065 (954-341-3900)
  • September 14 - National Sewing Month with the American Sewing Guild - Hand Sewing Techniques, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., North Regional/Broward College Library, 1100 Coconut Creek Blvd., Coconut Creek, FL 33066 (954-201-2600)
  • September 29 - National Sewing Month with the American Sewing Guild, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., South Regional/Broward College Library, 7300 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines, FL (954-201-8825)

For those interested in learning to sew, Broward County Library offers free online classes to library customers via Universal Class, an online educational service for lifelong learners. Log on using your Broward County Library card number to access free classes such as Knitting Basics or Sewing 101. You can also search the Broward County Catalog for books and other resources on sewing and textile crafts.

The award-winning Broward County Libraries Division, founded in 1974, is the ninth largest library system in the nation by population served and one of the busiest, with more than 9 million walk-in customers visiting its 37 locations annually. The library has more than 3.4 million items and 2,000 computers for public use and offers hundreds of events and programs to meet the needs of the Broward County's diverse community. The library continues its strong emphasis on literacy, after-school programs and electronic access. In addition to our comprehensive Web site, www.broward.org/library, which provides information about library activities, links to online catalogs, reference information and databases, customers can visit BCL WoW – Broward County Library Without Walls – for free eBooks, music, audiobooks, apps and more. Customers may also follow Libraries on Facebook and Twitter. Libraries Division also administers the services, programs, collections and exhibits of the Historical Commission.
