Airport Runway Structure and Overpass Construction at Port Everglades Causes Shift in Traffic Patterns Near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport

On Tuesday, July 10, the exit ramps from northbound US 1 (Federal Highway) and the airport to Port Everglades will close at 9 p.m. The closure is due to both the runway structure construction at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and the Florida Department of Transportation's (FDOT) Eller Drive Overpass construction.

All northbound lanes on US 1 turning into Port Everglades will be directed north on US 1 then left on SE 30th Street to SE 6th Avenue then south to the Eller Drive Extension. The exit lane leaving the airport to Port Everglades will be directed north on US 1 then left on SE 30th Street to SE 6th Avenue then south to the Eller Drive Extension. This detour is not expected to impact traffic travelling eastbound and westbound on I-595 into or from Port Everglades. This FDOT closure is expected to last until summer 2013.

On Thursday, July 12, at 7 p.m., the exit ramp from US 1 northbound to I-595 will close. Signs on US 1 (south of Griffin Road) will direct motorists to Griffin Road west and then to I-95 north to I-595.

On Friday, July 27, at 7 p.m., the ramp from the airport to southbound US 1 will close. Signs will direct drivers exiting the airport to southbound US 1 to travel north on US 1 and make a U-turn at either SE 30th Street or S.R. 84 and then head south. A second alternative is for drivers to travel on I-595 west, then to I-95 south.

Electronic and static signs are in place to direct motorists. Please see the attached detour maps for further clarification.

The Eller Drive Overpass construction is a project by the FDOT and Port Everglades. It is not associated with the South Runway Expansion Project.
