Imagine a mural created by the hands and minds of the people, a collaborative piece of art made by the men, women and children of one community, each contributing their own creativity to the whole. That is Imagination Squared, a community art project sponsored by the City of Pembroke Pines and Studio 18, a city-sponsored art studio and gallery that serves the Pembroke Pines community. Imagination Squared invites people of all ages to decorate identical five-inch squares, which will be available at three Broward County Library locations in Pembroke Pines, that will be placed together to create a community mural.

Three Broward County Library locations, as well as Studio 18, in will participate in Imagination Squared by hosting sessions with brief concept presentations and distributing squares:

July 10 – 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., South Regional/Broward College Library, 7300 Pines Boulevard, Pembroke Pines, FL 33024 (954-201-8825)
July 13 – 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and July 14, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Studio 18 in the Pines, 1101 Poinciana Dr., Pembroke Pines, FL 33025 (954-961-6067)

The mission of Imagination Squared is to showcase the importance of the arts and artistic expression in all our lives and provide a stage for a single community’s creative momentum. The squares will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. A donation of $1 per square (to cover the wood and costs) is requested but not mandatory.

All ages are invited to participate; other communities that have hosted Imagination Squared have received entries from everyone from an 11-month child to a 92-year-old senior citizen. Any arts and crafts supplies can be used to decorate the squares including photos, found objects or whatever else captures the imagination. Content should be appropriate for public venue and children’s audiences. The City of Pembroke Pines reserves the right to reject works deemed not family friendly.

The deadline for the completed squares is Wednesday, August 1, although squares may be dropped off before deadline. Please deliver squares to Studio 18 in the Pines (address above). Donated and decorated squares will not be returned. More guidelines will be available at the distribution sites.

The grand unveiling and public reception for the Imagination Squared mural will be held Friday, September 7, 2012 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Studio 18 in the Pines.
