Broward County’s Human Rights Section, HOPE, Inc. and Broward County Housing Finance and Community Development are offering a free Fair Housing Workshop, “Life, Liberty and Fair Housing for All,” on Friday, April 13, from 9 to 11:45 a.m. at the Signature Grand, 6900 State Road 84, in Davie. The purpose of the workshop is to explore current trends in Fair Housing affecting Broward County. Workshop topics include:

  • Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD’s) recent rules and initiatives 

Review of HUD’s recently published final rule, Equal Access to Housing in HUD Programs Regardless of Sexual Orientation or Gender identity (LGBT rule), which ensures that rental housing and home ownership programs remain open to all eligible persons regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or marital status.

  • Disability

Discussion of reasonable accommodations and reasonable modifications including a review of recent cases, with a focus on emotional support animals.

  • Familial Status

A review of Fair Housing issues affecting families with children, including occupancy restrictions, age restrictions and discriminatory rules/policies. 

  • Housing for Older Persons (55 and over communities)

 A discussion of the exemption granted to housing for older persons and the criteria for maintaining the exemption.

 

The workshop includes a free luncheon from 12 to 2 p.m., featuring keynote speaker Matthew Dietz, a civil rights attorney and activist. Dietz has litigated more than 250 cases in trial and appellate courts involving Americans With Disabilities Act, Fair Housing Act and other civil rights laws.
