Broward County held its first Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Symposium on January 25, to help establish a dialogue with local individuals and companies interested in learning more about how business and industry are impacted by the U.S. Department of Justice 2010 regulations amending the Act's Title II provisions. The event was hosted by the Broward County Office of Intergovernmental Affairs and Professional Standards, and sponsored by Humana and AT&T.
The free symposium at the Greater Fort Lauderdale-Broward County Convention Center was attended by more than 260 construction engineers, architects, building code officials, facility managers, and ADA representatives. Guest speakers included industry experts from federal, state and local government, and the private sector. Materials and handouts from the symposium are posted on broward.org.
"For years, Broward County has demonstrated a strong commitment to both the letter and the spirit of the ADA laws." said Gretchen Harkins, director of the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs and Professional Standards. "Our goal has always been to ensure that county government programs, services, facilities and activities are accessible to all, regardless of disability. The symposium was another way for us to stay informed about the newest regulations, and provide a helpful forum for discussing them with the community partners who are also required to comply with the ADA."
In 1979, the Broward County Board of County Commissioners established an Advisory Board for Individuals with Disabilities (ABID), which advocates for improvements to enhance the quality of life for persons with disabilities.
In addition to Harkins, Broward County's ADA team includes Steven Patterson, ADA Administrator/HIPAA Privacy Officer; Rhonda Wiltshire, Equal Opportunity Investigator; Tabitha Stevens and Jeremie Tanis, Equal Opportunity Assistants; Myrna Lopez-Arango, Assistant to the Director.
