Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) travelers can now use Google Maps on their Android devices to view detailed interior floor plans of the terminals and garages. Today, Google Maps introduced new expanded coverage of indoor locations in the U.S and Japan. In cooperation with the Broward County Aviation Department, FLL travelers using Google Maps can see the location of gates, concessions, restrooms, and garage layouts on their Android devices. Travelers can conveniently access this information on the go and quickly figure out where they are in our four terminals and our parking garages.

Google Maps is expanding its coverage to include popular indoor places. In Google Maps on an Android device, users will be able to view floor plans of hundreds of partnering locations in the U.S. and Japan such as airports, department stores, shopping malls, and large retailers. When a user accesses Google Maps on their Android device and zooms in to a building whose floor plan is included in Google Maps, they’ll see a detailed floor plan automatically appear on the map. Information overlaid on top of the building outline might include labels for boarding gates for airports, food vendors in shopping malls, and clothing and shoe departments in retail stores. Users can browse these floor plans for each floor of the location, and where the information is available see their detailed location indoors via the familiar “blue dot” icon.

“Travelers can now use Google Maps for Android to more quickly and effortlessly figure out where they are and what’s around them when they’re indoors,” said Steve Lee, Director of Product Management at Google. “We’re thrilled to work with Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to improve people’s airport experience and help them determine various places within the venue they might want to go – be it a specific gate, ticket counter, restaurant, or just a restroom or ATM.”

How does it work?
Indoor maps are seamlessly integrated into Google Maps--there is no separate app to download and no need to download individual areas. As the user zooms in, the map will automatically display the indoor floor plan with labeled points of interest (such as airport gates, food courts, retail stores and restrooms). , Android users can also see where they are inside FLL via the familiar “blue dot” icon. And for buildings with multiple floors, a tool on the right hand side of the screen will show the user which floor they are looking at - Google Maps can even display which floor the user is on and automatically changes floors if the user goes up or down a level.

How to start using Google Maps
Indoor maps are part of Google Maps 6.0 for Android-powered devices. Users will need to update the Google Maps application on their device in order to access these maps, but no updates will be required after that one-time installation to get new or updated indoor maps. Users can update Google Maps for Android by visiting the Google Maps entry in Android Market on their phones or desktop.
